April is upon us and Flipside’s opening is days away. April 28th – May 21, 7:30pm at The Hollander Building every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in case you need some memory refreshing.
Co-Artistic Director and lead Flipside writer, Julia Rosenblatt can throw her hands up and raise the roof for the writing aspect of her job is done. She has worked diligently to scale the content down and fill in all the necessary details to make the characters and content more cohesive. Rehearsals have been more animated, more exciting, more… whole, now that the meat of the matter has been pounded out. Last week, I walked in on a raucous and awesome table session as the actors focused on the music… improvising a melody as they vibed to sound designer Martin Carrillo’s “Drake treatment”. Cindy Martinez read the spoken-word element over the beat and melodies.
Flipside cleverly infuses hip hop with the idea of wormholes to help relay its story, as explained in this week’s 10th video installment. This play is good stuff… A labor of love for theater sans the ego that come with that particular medium, the Hartford community, and the need for change in the current drug policy. If these witty, well thought out blog posts coupled with the insightful, behind-the-scenes, short documentary installments aren’t enough to convince you that you need to see Flipside, then all the effort will’ve been in vain… Actually that’s not true, but the performances and work are exciting and should not be missed.
Now get into week 10 of Flipside…
